Becoming A Carpenter
Becoming a carpenter is not easy as 123. It takes hard work and dedication. An apprentice has to be willing to learn, and make mistakes become a perfectionist, use your imagination and always have an open mind. You have to be willing to use your mind and body at the same time constructively. And for those that are thinking about making a career out of this trade remember that every day is not going to be an easy day. There will be days that you may become physically tired from using your muscles on the job.
In other words a desk job is not for you. You are may be more of a hands on person like myself. Yes I decided to begin this page with the characteristics of carpenter because it is very important to understand the mindset that a carpenter has to have. Carpenters work hard, sometimes they do not mind the work that they are doing. They don't mind working hard for a living. There is an old saying An honest day's work for an honest day's pay.
Carpenters have a set limit on the amount of work that they are capable of handling throughout the day, just as all of us do because we're only human. We are only capable of producing so much work in a day.
If you are person that wants to become a carpenter you may want to take a look at the different areas of work that carpentry has to offer, such as finish work pertaining to trim and molding. If that is the case study and look into that part of carpentry and see if that is for you. There are many areas of carpentry to consider such as residential, commercial, kitchens and cabinets, concrete and foundational work, bridges and tunnels, weather proofing, there are many different areas that carpenters work in, these are just a few.
I started out cabinet making and now I'm doing commercial work. Life lead me to this road I really didn't choose carpentry, carpentry chose me. Carpentry just so happened to be one of those doors that was opened in my life and so I walked right through it and here I am 10 years in the union and 12 years in the business and I am 31 years old. I am still having a great time and I am doing what I love to do.
I suggest that if you would like to become a carpenter become follow your heart and everything else will flow in the right direction. If you want to be an ironworker, electrician, laborer, mill worker, whatever the case may be follow your heart and love for the trade. If you don't know your hearts desire then follow your gut and if you don't know what your gut is saying, just do what works but do something. Becoming a carpenter takes patience it takes 5 years to complete a carpentry apprentiship but its well worth it once its the title journeyman is achieved.
