Carpenters Union
Ever since I got out of high school I wanted to go to the union. I wanted work at a job were everyone made the same rate. But I heard it was hard to get in, so I went to Job Corps a government funded school were they have a preapprenticeship program that guided me to get in the union and prepared me for the math test that I had to take. Less then a year later there I was in the union, making good money with benefits.
O Yes, the pay is great in the carpenters union, but that’s not the only thing that is great they also have good benefits a pension, annuity and a vacation fund. I’m also a member of the federal credit union. Another benefit on being a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) is this; if I decided to move to a different state I don’t have to worry about looking for another job because as long as the state has a carpenters union I will be able to work in that state as a union carpenter but the pay does vary in different states. UBC is connected across the U.S and Canada. Another benefit is if I am having a big problem with a contractor I can simply quit or get laid off. And the union will give me another job. In my down time I just collect unemployment. The carpentry union is powerful, its been around for a very long time and its not going anywhere some people tell me that the union has gotten weak over the years whether it has or has not it doesn’t matter it is deeply rooted in America and its not going anywhere.
